ABOUT COUGAR ATHLETICS
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is a public institution with two main campuses, one in Calmar and one in Peosta. The NICC athletic department, approved by the Board of Trustees in the fall of 2024, sponsors seven intercollegiate sports teams. The Board approved the addition of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country and dance to the already existing athletic programs. Prior to Board approval, Sports Shooting had been competing in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) since 2017. Esports became the College's second athletic program in 2022.

At Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), the Cougars aren’t just a mascot — they’re a symbol of determination and pride. From buzzer-beaters to championship titles, NICC athletes know what it means to compete.
The Cougars first took the field in the late '60s, back when NICC was called Area One Vocational-Technical School. Over the years, the college grew, but the competitive spirit stayed the same. Basketball, Softball, Cheerleading, Golf and Wrestling dominated the scene from the '70s through the '90s.
Fast forward to today, and NICC is making serious waves. In 2017, Sports Shooting became the College's first sanctioned athletic program, putting Cougars on the map in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). Then came Esports. Established in 2022, the NICC Esports squad leveled up fast. By 2024, they were competing nationally, and Cougar student-athlete Mason Cigrand cemented his name in NICC history by snagging the College’s first-ever National Championship in Hearthstone.
And that’s just the beginning. In 2024, NICC went all-in by adding Baseball, Dance, Cross Country and Softball to its growing roster. With a spot in the ICCAC Region 11 and the NJCAA, the Cougars are set to leave their mark.
