Cougar Esports hires Bohr as assistant
He knew he wanted to make a difference in others’ lives, and that’s what led him to his current profession and coaching eighth-grade football. Once he saw the opening at NICC, he knew it was a good fit.
The Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Esports program will now be covering a little more ground, now that an assistant coach has been hired to oversee the Calmar campus arena. Montana Bohr of Decorah will facilitate the north end in conjunction with Head Coach Verrick Foust.
Bohr is an NICC graduate and currently lives in Decorah and works at Decorah High School as a paraeducator. He knew he wanted to make a difference in others' lives, and that's what led him to his current profession and coaching eighth-grade football. Once he saw the opening at NICC, he knew it was a good fit.
"After graduating high school," Bohr said, "I knew I wanted to help people, I just didn't know how I wanted that to look. Football was something I knew I loved, and I began helping out in that department. I think I bring energy, excitement and enthusiasm for esports and playing games in general."
Bohr has been playing games most of his life, and although he didn't necessarily think coaching was in his future at that time, he always had the competitiveness that these games require.
"I've been playing video games since I could run a joystick on a Pac-Man game," he said. "I grew up on the old Madden and NCAA games. I think I can help garner interest in the competition side of video games."
As we have seen the interest level in esports pick up on the Calmar campus, the hiring of Bohr was imperative to provide the best college experience for those athletes. Bohr hopes to continue to grow the program in Calmar to the point where it becomes a regular part of the College's everyday life.
"I am so excited to get a coach in Calmar to help expand our esport program," Head Coach Foust said. "I know he will do an amazing job."
The 2025-26 season starts in September, and Bohr will be a necessary tool for Coach Foust to help make this season a success. Stay up-to-date on NICC Athletics at niccathletics.com.
