The Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) sport shooters started their season on Sept. 6 facing off against Kirkwood Community College and Indian Hills Community College in a triangular at Otter Creek Sportsman Club near Cedar Rapids.
Elizabeth Ward's 89 and Alexis Elsbernd's 87 were the top two female scores in the first contest against the Eagles, while Marshall Schiphoff led the men with a 93. Logan Frye (80) was the only other Cougar to score in the top five, but NICC was able to edge out the Eagles 428 - 419.
Ty Kenan (79), Ethan Harms (78), Brendan Doty (60) and Benjamin Halonen (60) also added scores to NICC's total.
"It was not my best," Elsbernd said, "but it was still a really good score. Towards the end, I was starting to find my rhythm."
NICC ran into a very good Indian Hills team in the second half of their competition. Ward, Elsbernd and Schiphoff all matched their first-round scores, but the Warriors had 12 shooters with scores more than 90. The Cougars dropped this match 481 - 428.
Frye, Kenan, Harms, Doty and Halonen also repeated their scores from the first match
"With a majority of our team being new student-athletes," Head Coach Anthony Sisneros said, "our returning members will have to step up to show their leadership as the season progresses. There's still room to grow, but we're putting in the work and staying focused on the next challenge."
"It was a good start to the season," returning NICC sports shooter Ward said. "It could've been better, but there is always room for improvement. It's good to be back. I can't wait for what's next for the season."
The Cougars travel to Ventura, Iowa, for the Waldorf Shootout on Sept. 19 for their next event. Follow the NICC Sports Shooting team all season long by visiting niccathletics.com.
