Cougars show improvement in big win over the Warriors
"While no individual awards were handed out," Head Coach Anthony Sisneros said, "our athletes delivered strong individual performances that powered our overall score.”
The Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) sports shooting team was initially set to compete against several teams at the Waldorf Shootout on Sept. 19. However, with other schools dropping out, the competition shifted to a head-to-head showdown between NICC and Waldorf University. Cougar shooters put up their strongest performance so far this season, handing the Warriors a 464 - 430 loss.
After having just two individual scores above 90 in their first two competitions of the season, the Cougars had five athletes exceed that against the Warriors, including Elizabeth Ward (97), Marshall Schiphoff (96), Alexis Elsbernd (91), Ty Kenan (90) and Logan Frye (90).
"Despite the rain," Ward said, "it was a great competition. The team got another win in the books, and I got a new personal best. Overall, we showed up and got it done."
"Even though we had a little rain delay," Schiphoff said, "we were able to pull off a win and make improvements from the last meet."
Other NICC scores included Colton Tollefsrud (88), Gunner Thorson (81), Michael McCormick (75), Ethan Harms (69), Brendan Doty (66) and Benjamin Halonen (61).
"What began as an open invitational turned into a head-to-head matchup against Waldorf," Head Coach Anthony Sisneros said, "and we rose to the challenge, bringing home a team win. While no individual awards were handed out, our athletes delivered strong individual
performances that powered our overall score."
NICC now hosts the Hawkeye Community College RedTails on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Turkey Valley Trap Range in Jackson Junction. The Cougars currently sit with a 2-1 record. Stay up-to-date on NICC Athletics by visiting niccathletics.com.
