Cougars place 9th at state championships
“I am proud of the team’s effort, hard work, progress and lasting memories built through competition,” Head Coach Anthony Sisneros said.
The Northeast Iowa Community College's (NICC) Sport Shooting season came to a close on Oct. 17, 2025 at the Iowa Collegiate Trap Championships in Ackley, Iowa. Iowa Western Community College defeated 10 other Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) schools with a score of 992.
Alexis Elsbernd and Marshall Schiphoff each shot a score of 185, with Elsbernd finishing 8th out of 29 shooters and Schiphoff taking 53rd out of 111. Elizabeth Ward (180), Colton Tollefsrud (179), Logan Frye (174), Ethan Harms (173), Michael McCormick (167), Brendan Doty (154) and Gunnar Thorson (147) all added scores.
NICC finished in 9th place overall, totaling 903 points.
"For many of our student-athletes," Head Coach Anthony Sisneros said, "this marked their first experience in a 200-target competition—an event that demands both mental focus and physical endurance. While results varied among team members, with some exceeding expectations and others showing significant improvement, the overall performance reflected the team's commitment and growth."
High winds the day of the event made for a very challenging environment, but the Cougar shooters tried making the best of rough conditions.
"I am proud of the team's effort, hard work, progress and lasting memories built through competition," Sisneros said.
"It's such a bittersweet ending to the season," second-year shooter Elizabeth Ward said. "We all showed improvement throughout the season. I'm glad I was able to meet these people and hope I can cherish these memories."
